Data Privacy Brazil participates in the 18th edition of the Internet Governance Forum in Japan
Data Privacy Brasil will aim to monitor and contribute to topics such as governance, regulation, accountability, and digital civil identity, giving visibility to the Brazilian scenario and the Global South.
Between October 8th and 12th, the Internet Governance Forum – IGF will take place in Kyoto, Japan, with the theme “The Internet we want: empowering all people”. In its 18th edition, the forum once again brings together multiple actors to discuss policies on aspects of internet governance.
Data Privacy Brasil will be present at the event and is represented by its director, Rafael Zanatta, researchers Nathan Paschoalini, and Louise Karczerski. Marina Meira, researcher of Platform and Digital Markets, will also attend side events organized by an international coalition focused on digital identities.
The association has participated in several editions of the event, in 2021, in the 16th edition that took place in Katowice, Poland, Data organized the panel “The Rising of Techno-Authoritarianism: When the Employment of Technology is an Enabler of Human Rights Abuses”.
In this new edition, Rafael Zanatta participates as a guest on the panels “Exploring Blockchain’s Potential for Responsible Digital ID” and “Internet Standards and Human Rights”. Researcher Nathan Paschoalini will also be a rapporteur on the panel “Beyond Development: Connectivity as a Human Rights Enabler”. And governance and regulation coordinator Jaqueline Pigatto will remotely moderate the networking session “Global South Solidarities for Global Digital Governance”.
According to Zanatta, the IGF has gained strength again in light of the UN Global Digital Compact agenda and efforts to build better global arrangements for defining policies for the use of the Internet today and in the future.
“The themes of digital rights and data protection permeate several IGF discussions, such as the protection of children in the online environment, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, and the digital public infrastructure agenda, such as digital civil identities and integrated payment systems”.
With the advancement of guidelines on digital technologies, the IGF became a space for broader debates in which not only technical and concentration topics related to the Internet were dealt with. In this edition, Data Privacy Brasil will aim to monitor and contribute to topics such as governance, regulation, accountability, and digital civil identity, giving visibility to the Brazilian scenario and the Global South.
For this reason, for Zanatta, Data Privacy Brasil’s participation in the event is so important, “It is crucial to bring a voice from the Global South that is based on research of public interest. We are very happy to collaborate with the Internet Governance Forum for another year.”
