The Global South Alliance is a coalition formed in 2022 with the mission of unifying NGOs dedicated to the promotion of mutual learning and the advancement of digital rights with a perspective from the Global South. The Alliance was structured as a result of the engagement between partner organizations Aapti Institute, Data Privacy Brasil, and Paradigm Initiative, which currently compose the GSA’s Steering Committee. Based on meetings at the Data Privacy Global Conference, RightsCon and the Internet Governance Forum, this alliance was structured to create bonds of solidarity and dialogue between organizations from the Global South; fostering a space for mutual strengthening, dialogue and listening. Some of the Alliance’s initiatives include the Datafication and Democracy Fund and the digital library.

In May, the Global South Alliance welcomed 13 new members, reaching the total number of 26 organisations. The Alliance opened membership applications in February, during RightsCon in Taipei. According to the membership criteria, eligible organizations should be non-profit entities, think tanks, or collectives based in or led by individuals from the Global South, with a proven commitment to digital rights, aligned with values of solidarity and democracy, and able to attend monthly online meetings.

Following a collective process of selection, the members of the Global South Alliance reached the final list of 13 new members, from Latin America, Africa, and Asia:

Center of AI and Tech Innovation for Democracy (PIKAT) Indonesia
Centre for Policy Alternatives Sri Lanka
Freedom Forum Nepal
Tech Global Institute South and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East
Digital Access Cameroon
DUKINGIRE ISI YACU (DIY) Burundi
Threats Uganda
Jokkolabs Banjul Gambia
Masaar Egypt
InternetLab Brazil
TEDIC Paraguay
Aláfia Lab Brazil
Fundación Multitudes Chile

The new members were welcomed in our monthly meeting of May, presented with the Global South Alliance’s mission, work methods, and main initiatives. With the new organizations, which represent new countries and regions in the Alliance, we hope to strengthen the collective work of the Global South in the promotion of digital rights and our joint initiatives, such as the digital library – for which we currently have a job position open. Some of the new and old members are also meeting in person in the upcoming Internet Governance Forum, in Oslo (Norway), at the end of June.
